Mega B Complex contains all 8 B vitamins including B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, biotin (B7) and folic acid (B9), as well as choline and inositol.
B vitamins perform essential, closely inter-related roles in the body to support cellular functioning and act as co-enzymes in a vast array of catabolic and anabolic enzymatic reactions. Their most important role is to convert carbohydrates, protein and fat into energy.
Choline and inositol are both members of the B vitamin family. Choline is necessary for the structure and function of cells and inositol is involved in the transport and metabolism of fats.
B vitamins are not synthesised by the body and therefore must be taken through the diet.
In terms of their origins, B vitamins are typically synthesised by plants. However, humans obtain most of their B vitamins from higher up the food chain in foods of animal origin, such as meat, dairy and eggs.
B vitamins are water soluble, meaning the body is unable to store them in large amounts. As such, regular daily intake is required to support general health.
B vitamins work synergistically in the body, so are best when taken together.
Mega B Complex is suitable for preconception, pregnancy and breastfeeding, when increased vitamins are required. Mega B Complex provides a daily dose of 400 micrograms of folinic acid to support healthy foetal development.
Folinic acid (5-formlyTHF), is a more active form of folate than folic acid as it by passes the di-hydrofolate reductase step in the folic acid metabolism pathway. Individuals with a MTHRF gene mutation have difficulty producing the enzyme which converts folic acid to the active forms folinic acid and methylfolate. Providing folinic acid as an active form of folate bypasses this step.
